Plein Air Painting: Churches of Madison County

eden church

“Plein Air Painting: Churches of Madison County” is a juried show where artists can submit paintings they’ve created of any church in Madison County.  From now until mid-November, we’re asking artists (even beginners!) to get outside and paint churches in Madison County!  Madison County has tons of beautiful, historical churches in picturesque settings.  We’re hoping to see churches painted in summer, fall, and even winter, when the trees and skies will have a variety of gorgeous backdrops for our beloved Madison County Churches.  The show will be hung in conjunction with our “Holiday Show” this winter, from November 24th – December 29th.

  • Exhibition of Work – Exhibited work will be displayed in the Main Gallery of the EAC in conjunction with our “Holiday Show” from November 24th to December 29th, 2017.  An opening reception is scheduled for Friday, November 24th from 6pm to 8pm.  The work will be displayed alongside ceramic cups, glass bulbs, and originals from our annual EAC coloring book for a fun Holiday art show.
  • Artist Recognition – The top thirteen paintings as determined by the juror, will be reproduced in full color in a 2018 monthly calendar available for purchase at the EAC during the holiday season.  In addition, all other selected entries will be published on the artist’s birth date throughout the calendar.
  • Juror – John DenHouter will serve as the juror for the exhibition.  Mr. DenHouter is an associate professor of art at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.  He holds a BFA degree and an MFA degree in medical and biological illustration from the University of Michigan as well as an MFA degree in painting from Eastern Michigan University.  He is an experienced plein air painter having produced hundreds of landscapes in both watercolor and oil.  His studio and plein air paintings have been exhibited in over 170 competitive and invitational exhibitions regionally and nationally and have garnered numerous awards.
  • Media:  Oil, acrylic, tempera, gouache, watercolor, pastel, graphite, charcoal, pen and ink, collage, and colored pencil.  All paintings at time of submission must be framed and dry and all dry media pieces must be framed behind glass or plexiglass.

Juried Show

Void: Places Without People

Everyday, we gather in the public places we have created. The purposes of these places are to promote community, share in conversation, be entertained, learn, travel, engage in commerce, and grow. In other words, public places are ideally locales where like-minded people gather and participate in a greater system. These indoor and outdoor microcosms essentially nurture the human condition. We inhabit these places for a short while and play the role the place intends for us: employee, consumer, worshipper, leader, student, teacher, etc. We change who we are in these roles as the structures change by our visiting there.

What occurs when these places are empty of any human experience? Are they asleep, waiting to be awoken again? Are they completely deserted and left to waste? What had happened to the inhabitants? Was it a choice to not visit or something more ominous?

Void: Places Without People is an exhibition showcasing these empty places, beautiful and striking in their silence. All works should thematically or visually adhere to imagery that evokes places that are usually full with human involvement, yet empty due a variety of scenarios, real or imagined. These can be images of depictions of places in their already empty natural state, or overtly manipulated to bring attention to the deleted human elements. Non-traditional approaches involving choices of media, challenging visualized perspectives, distortion of form, non-representational imagery, and personal narrative works are welcome.

Media:  Media is open: painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture, ceramics, metals, textiles, and mixed media. Email before submitting works with unique installation methods, video works, and large works exceeding 7 ft in height.

Only original works may be submitted. Exhibition is juried by images, not delivered works. The Edwardsville Arts Center maintains the right to reject delivered works if not display ready or if it does not match the image originally submitted. The gallery does not provide funds for shipping. Email for local delivery/drop off times.
